The Adoption Counselor is the main point of contact for members of the public seeking to adopt a pet from Furry Friends, and as such is a critical member of our lifesaving team. The Adoption Counselor unites homeless cats and dogs with their new families, recognizing that the shelter is a temporary waystation for animals and a hub of programs designed to support pets and people.
**ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
**Adoption Counseling/Customer Service (60%)**
* Greet visitors warmly and assist them in choosing an appropriate pet
* Practice an “open adoptions” attitude and approach when counseling adoptions. Furry Friends does not judge potential adopters based on their race, gender, perceived social or financial status, etc. It is our job to create the adopters that we want to see in our community through education and support.
* Have a thorough understanding of Furry Friends’ Adoption policies and Standard Operating procedures.
* Facilitate conversations about the adopter’s lifestyle and living situation and attempt to lead them to pets that would meet their needs.
* When appropriate, promote services we offer to improve the lives of pets already in the home–such as low cost sterilization and vaccination.
* Process all aspects of adoptions. This includes: Approving adoption applications in Shelterluv and communicating with potential adopters to arrange appointments; coordinating with veterinary staff and behavior team to identify animals requiring additional medical or behavioral adoption waivers or disclosures; ensuring all adoption contracts, along with waivers/disclosures are accurately recorded in Shelterluv; discussing any specific known medical or behavioral care or plans the animal will need post\-adoption in addition to general adoption counseling.
**Marketing Adoptable Animals (20%)**
* Familiarize yourself with all adoptable animals at Furry Friends
* Ensure adoptable dogs have accurate kennel cards with all necessary signage within 24 hours of arrival in Jupiter
* Write creative and engaging Shelterluv bios for our adoptable animals within 72 hours of arrival on adoption floor
* Share animals across social media channels
**Post\-Adoption Follow Up (10%)**
* Conduct one week and one month post\-adoption follow up calls to all new adopters.
* Ensure medical and behavior plans are being followed.
* Work with the behavior and veterinary teams to offer additional resources, if necessary, to support the pet in the home
**Assessing Outcomes (10%)**
* Assist intake coordinator with the return of adopted pets; track the reason for return to ensure a better placement next time around; collect general data on primary reasons pets are returned to inform our adoption counseling process
**Other Duties as Assigned**
**QUALIFICATIONS:**
* College Degree preferred but not required
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills, bilingual English/Spanish a plus
* Personable, engaging, and outgoing with an emphasis on outstanding customer service
* Able to juggle multiple complex tasks efficiently and patiently in a fast\-paced environment, while also being friendly and welcoming
* High comfort level with technology and experience with Google Suite
* Familiarity with Shelterluv a plus
* This position requires excellent attendance, punctuality and reliability
* Commitment to Furry Friends’ culture of compassion and achievement
**WORKING CONDITIONS**
* Must be able to work around animals including those with behavioral issues or physical illnesses, loud noises, chlorine or other chemicals, and inclement weather
* Must be able to comfortably interact with cats/dogs of various health levels, including zoonotic diseases such as ringworm, scabies, intestinal parasites, etc.
* Must be able to walk big dogs that pull and jump
* Must be able to visually observe people and animals from up to 150 feet away
* Ability to hear normal speech at close contact and shouting up to 150 feet away with the ability to hear and discern dog vocalizations both soft and loud
* Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
* Must be able to focus in a loud and busy environment despite distractions
* Must be able to walk around shelter as needed \- uneven ground, keeping a safe distance from dogs and handlers
* Will sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, stoop, bend, stretch, squat, kneel, grasp, grip, put fingers together firmly and reach above and below shoulder level, lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds and push and pull up to 50 pounds for situations of moving supplies and setting up for events; repetitively use hands to operate computers; flex the neck upward and downward; twist the neck and the waist
* Some evening and weekend hours required
